Whitehouse, Mary

English media activist and campaigner for broadcasting standards. She founded the Clean Up TV campaign in 1964, which was renamed as the National Viewers' and Listeners' Association, and was president of that organization until 1994. She campaigned to improve moral standards in the media, and in 1977 brought a successful private prosecution against the newspaper Gay News. Partly in response to Whitehouse's pressure, in 1990 the Broadcasting Act was passed, extending legislation covering obscene publications to television. She was made a CBE in 1980.
